3 Reasons We Stop Exercising and How to Avoid Them

If there’s one thing about exercise that I really hate, it’s that it’s not a one-time wonder that helps you keep your weight down forever. Don’t get me wrong here - I do love exercise and the high that it brings, not to mention the fact that it helps me tone and sculpt my body, but what gets my goat is that every time I am forced to take a break from exercising, when I do start up again, it’s like beginning from scratch, especially if the break is longer than planned.
When you stop exercising, you tend to put on weight because you don’t reduce the amount of food you eat, especially if you’re on vacation and doing nothing but eating and relaxing. So the best thing to do is to identify the reasons you stop exercising, and avoid them as much as possible or at least learn to beat them once in a while. If you think about it, the most common reasons we stop working out are:
  • Illness: No matter how much you want to, you can’t continue with your workout program when you’re ill. Your body refuses to move and you feel like spending all day in bed. Moreover, it’s not wise to exercise when you’re down with a cold, fever or any other illness. While you cannot control when you fall ill and what disease you get, what you can do is boost your immune system by eating the right kinds of food that are rich in nutrients and vitamins. You could also concentrate on getting better by resting and taking your medication instead of taxing your body and prolonging your stay in bed.
  • Vacations: Who doesn’t need them? They’re how we unwind, relax and rejuvenate ourselves so that we can come back and work harder than before. But if you’re following a regular exercise routine, there’s nothing like a vacation to kill your resolve and make you lazier when you return. For one, you spend your time relaxing, eating and sleeping. And for another, when you return, you don’t feel like resuming your regular activities because it means you’ve got to acknowledge that vacation is over and that it’s back to the grind. If you’re serious about your workout program and about maintain your weight, you could make your vacation a little more active. Take walks along the beach or go for a swim in your hotel’s pool. Get involved in adventurous and sporty activities that keep you active. And even before you get back, start psyching yourself mentally to get back to your workout the day after you’re back.
  • Deadlines at work: Another reason most of us skip exercise is if we’re overworked and need to use all the waking time we have to catch up on work and meet looming deadlines. While these situations could potentially be avoided by not putting off for the morrow what we can do today, there are times when you cannot control circumstances. One way to get around this obstacle to exercise is to steal 10 minutes at a time twice or thrice a day in which you could do squats, lunges, leg lifts or any other exercise that is powerful and which does not take time.

5 Ways to Make Exercising Fun

All of us need to exercise, but sometimes we use the excuse that exercise is boring. We are going to offer some suggestions that will make exercise more fun and therefore make us more prone to participate.

  1. Listen to music - One of the more obvious choices is to listen to some of your favorite tunes. Select some music with a beat that will take your mind off of what you are doing (walking, running, riding a bike, etc.) and the time will go by quickly and more enjoyably.
  2. Wear a smile - Keep a smile on your face while working out and before you know it, you'll convince yourself that you're having a good time. Wear a funny t-shirt that will cause people you meet to crack a smile or to laugh. Before you know it, you'll be having a good time.
  3. Try something new - If you normally walk, run or ride a bike, try something out of the norm. Enroll in a dance class or possibly take a class in tae kwon do. Check around your local area and try out something new and different every once in a while to keep you interest in exercise at a peak.T
  4. Share exercise with a friend - Sharing an exercise routine with a friend can help make exercise a more enjoyable activity. Having a friend along will make it easier to enroll in and try out some new exercise routines. And your friendship will benefit from the extra time spent together.
  5. Set goals and reward yourself - Set goals to meet in your exercise routine and then when you accomplish that goal, reward yourself with a pedicure or a massage. Setting goals can give you something to strive for and knowing that you will be rewarded once you reach that goal will make it fun.

How to Increase Vertical Leap by Strengthening Your Leg Muscles

Playing basketball and volleyball is a great way of staying fit, but you may need to learn how to increase vertical jumps to excel at those sports. If your kind of game is more offensive and scoring points is important to you, or if you just want to be defensive player and deny your opponent hís ability to score, then being able to jump higher will make your game even definitely better.

Now, here is one thing all professional athletes and varsity players know. The ability to jump higher can be learned. It is hard work but anyone who will dedicate time and energy to train how to jump higher will surely see noticeable improvements in vertical leaps ranging from six to twelve more inches in jump heights.

Because jumping relies more on explosive strength more than physical endurance, a requirement for jump trainings is a certain level of physical strength that allows you to absorb the rigors of the training. A good measure of fitness is the ability to squat with weights 1.5 times heavier than your body weight. Anyone who is not able to pass this test needs to condition themselves for an average of two to three months so that they can make the requirement.

Training to develop how to increase vertical leap, like most exercises, are carried out in three phases: warm-up, the workout proper, and cool-down.

For warming up activities, do some stretching and a bit of running or skipping rope afterwards. Effective warm-up stretches include movements that follow how you move yourself during the actual workout. We already know that stretching loosens up any stiffness in your body and is very important in preventing injuries. Jogging and skipping rope, aside from being great warm-up exercises, are very good for building cardio-vascular strength and endurance. Make sure that you do not over exert yourself while warming up because the actual workout activity can be very physically demanding. If you are already tired, you might not be able to maintain correct form and just injure yourself in the process.

The most effective exercises for increasing leaping ability are called plyometric exercises. In this article, we will talk about two simple and popular exercises that have been found by many to improve your jumping.

The first exercise we will be doing is called depth jumps. Stand on any raised platform such as a box. Step off the box and drop to the ground softly. Immediately (minimal ground contact) jump up and extend your arms skywards. Repeat ten times per set and do three sets. Rest and hydrate yourself and proceed to the next exercise.

Our next drill is called the lateral high hops. A raised platform that is as wide as an average chair is needed. Stand on one side of the platform. Do not face the platform, put yourself besides the platform. Start by making the foot that is closer to the box step on top of the platform. Now jump as high as you can using the force coming from the raised leg. Your aim is to land on the other side of the platform and this time with the opposite foot stepping on the platform. When exploding with your raised leg, extend your arms upwards for maximum height. Repeat ten times per set and do three sets. Rest and hydrate yourself.

Do these and other plyometric exercises regularly. Make sure that you also give yourself adequate rest. You will really feel your muscles burn, and that is a good thing. In no time, practicing learning how to increase vertical height in your jumps will give you a marked improvement in vertical leaps.
